Where it is made, and how

Ashley Furniture Industries has been building furniture since 1945, and it does something unusual for the trade: it makes a great deal of what it sells rather than buying finished goods. That vertical reach, from raw lumber and foam through to the finished piece, is the reason a sofa at this price can still carry a proper hardwood frame.

The company runs plants across the United States and Asia, employs roughly 35,000 people and ships to more than 123 countries. Arcadia, Wisconsin is still the centre of it, a town where the company came to employ more people than the population.

Lumber and frame

Frames start as kiln-dried hardwood and engineered panels cut to pattern. Corner blocks are glued and screwed rather than stapled alone, because the corner is where a seat frame fails first.

Foam and springs

Seat decks get sinuous springs or wrapped coils, then layered foam. Density is chosen per seat: firmer in the base, softer on top, which is what stops a cushion flattening in a year.

Upholstery

Covers are cut, matched and sewn, then hand-pulled over the frame. Pattern matching across a seam is done by eye, which is why two sofas in the same fabric are never quite identical.

Finishing

Case goods are sanded, stained and topcoated in stages, with drying time between each. Drawer boxes are fitted, glides set and hardware hung.

Inspection and pack

Pieces are checked for finish, function and fit, then boxed with the hardware and instructions. Flat packing is what keeps a large item affordable to ship.

A drawer tells you more than a spec sheet. Look for dovetailed corners, a dust panel between drawers and glides that run on ball bearings rather than plastic tabs.

Furniture marketing throws a lot of acronyms around. Here is what each one means, and how much of this catalogue it touches. We count from the listings themselves rather than claiming a badge across the whole range.

Foam tested for content, emissions and durability, made without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury or formaldehyde. 39 of the pieces listed here state CertiPUR-US certified foam, almost all of them mattresses and foam toppers.

Inspection

Check finish, function and fit before you build. Keep the packaging until you are happy, because it makes any return far simpler.

Returns

Handled through Amazon, with collection arranged for large items. The window and the process are theirs, which means you are not relying on a small shop to make it right.

Warranty

Ashley provides a manufacturer warranty that varies by piece, typically longer on frames and springs than on fabric and foam. The paperwork in the carton has the terms for your item.

The things people ask us

Is this furniture made in the United States?

Partly. Ashley runs plants in Wisconsin, Mississippi, Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida, alongside factories in Vietnam and China. Upholstery and motion seating are heavily US-built; many case goods and components come from Asia. The listing for a given piece is the place to check its origin.

How long does assembly take?

Accent pieces and lamps take ten to twenty minutes. Sofas usually need legs and a back attached, so twenty to forty. Beds, dressers and dining sets are the real jobs at roughly 45 to 90 minutes, and a second pair of hands makes a difference. Hardware and instructions are in the box.

What does "Signature Design by Ashley" mean?

It is Ashley's own flagship label, the line the company designs and builds under its own name rather than for a retailer. Collections carry proper names like Realyn, Valebeck or Bolanburg, and pieces within a collection are made to sit together.

Will a sofa fit through my door?

Most standard sofas clear a 32 inch door once tilted, because what matters is the smaller of the depth and height, not the width. Our measure calculator checks doorways, hallway turns and the wall in one pass. If it is close, taking the door off its hinges buys about an inch and a half.

Are the mattresses safe to sleep on straight away?

Boxed mattresses are compressed for shipping and want 24 to 48 hours to reach full loft. A new-foam smell for the first few days is normal and fades with air. The Chime foam is CertiPUR-US certified, which covers emissions and content.

How do returns work?

Purchases complete through Amazon, so they carry Amazon's return window and support, including collection for larger items. Inspect the piece on arrival and keep the packaging until you are satisfied. Damage in transit is worth reporting straight away rather than after assembly.

Do I really need to anchor a dresser?

Yes. Tall drawers and a climbing child are a genuinely dangerous combination, which is why the ASTM F2057 stability standard became mandatory in the US and why an anchoring kit ships in the box. It takes five minutes.

Can I mix pieces from different collections?

You can, and most rooms look better for it. The reliable trick is to keep one thing constant, usually the wood tone or the metal finish, and let shapes vary. Our room planner is there for when you would rather it all match.
